1999 is open source, which means it is free to use, modify and (re)distribute. It also means that 1999 is not for sale and cannot be bought, ever. However, 1999 is not free to make: the development and server maintenance cost us time and money, which is why we need your support.

Unlike other messaging apps, you can choose your server (there are many volunteer-run servers available),
and event create your own if you want to be in complete control of your data!
Because of the decentralized nature of the XMPP protocol, it doesn’t matter which server you’re on.
Any server can talk to every other, so don’t think about it too much!

Because there should be no compromise on privacy or security, your messages are encrypted with OMEMO by default. Nobody can read your conversations except you (and the people you chat with) (if they want to)

1999 is not real. Yet.
I am only a UI designer, and I don’t have the knowledge or experience to code this app for now. I am willing to learn, but even so, I won’t be able to do it alone. Contact meAfter announcing this project I got contacted by the developer of Moxxy, a modern XMPP client for Android written in Flutter. I am now working on Moxxy's UI and do not plan to do anything of 1999. If you're interested in this project, you should contribute to Moxxy instead!
